PRP is a non-surgical therapy that uses components of your own blood to promote your body’s ability to heal itself. Everyone’s blood is comprised up of four components: platelets, plasma, red blood cells, and white blood cells.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy relies on platelets and plasma in the blood to help heal injuries, relieve pain and inflammation. Platelets are primarily known in their role for controlling bleeding. However, platelets also release over a 1,000 growth factors and proteins to help promote healing and tissue repair.

The process of making PRP is relatively straight forward and starts with a simple blood draw. A small sample of YOUR blood is drawn and placed in a powerful centrifuge. A centrifuge is a machine that spins the blood at an ultra-high setting. This process separates the platelets and plasma from the white and red blood cells into a highly concentrated form otherwise known as Platelet Rich Plasma. This plasma is RICH with platelets, proteins, and a variety of growth factors and is injected into a targeted area using ultrasound guidance.

The different growth factors released by platelet rich plasma enhance your body’s ability to heal itself naturally, and the platelets attract your own stem cells to the injured area allowing your body to heal itself faster.

The Importance of Ultrasound Guidance

At Atlas Medical Center, our Medical providers believe that using musculoskeletal ultrasound guidance is the optimal way to perform this procedure. Ultrasound guidance eliminates all of the guess work, and it allows the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to be injected into the targeted area, exactly at the site of damage or injury. We know precisely by looking at the damaged area in REAL TIME where this plasma needs to be injected. (We also use a local numbing agent so that there is minimal to no discomfort during the injection.)

Symptoms We Treat With Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tendinitis (For example, golfer or tennis elbow)
  • Acute soft tissue injuries
  • Peripheral neuropathy
